“I love when you talk about your work because your eyes just light up!” My best friend said this to me this past week while I was drawing a picture of a baby, placenta, umbilical cord in a
uterus on the paper-covered table top at Jack Astor's. Our waiter was probably less excited, maybe even grossed out as I explained to my friend about how the placenta detaches from the uterus after a baby is born.
How many people can say that their eyes “light up” every time they talk about their job?
Well, I’m excited to say that tomorrow I’ll be witness to a room full of shining eyes as Carol Anne and I host and take part in ProDoula’s Postpartum Doula Training out of our Mississauga teaching space.
We are so delighted to have Colleen Downey, ProDoula Trainer and co-owner of Indianapolis Doulas with us all the way from Indianapolis, Indiana. Carol Anne and I had dinner with Colleen and had a wonderful time swapping stories, talking about our families and of course, delving into our work as doulas. Needless to say, we are excited to see her in action tomorrow!
I have been doing postpartum work for families for about 4 years and before that I worked as a nanny. I have supported many different types of families, with many different styles of parenting. I have seen them through hardships and joy, and always through exhaustion! It has been quite a journey and I am delighted to see this group of doulas come out of this training ready to take the next steps in their journeys to support families in this rewarding career!
Tomorrow: here I come with eyes a-blazing!
