When my daughter was around four and a half months old one of the great moms I had befriended in pregnancy asked if I wanted to do a dance class called "Salsa Babies".
My first reaction was to not take the class.
I came up with excuses not to take the class (the cost, I would get hot and sweaty, I had never danced before...)
However, after discussing with my husband and thinking more about it, I finally came around to the idea of giving it a shot. What did I have to lose anyways, right? The cost was comparable to the yoga I was doing, I could dress myself and my little one lightly so we didn't get too hot, and if I made a fool out of myself dancing it didn't really matter because I would be in the presence of other moms, who I was sure would support me.
I made the choice to dance!
Here are five reason why I am so happy I made that choice and why I now love to dance!
1. Bonding with my little one
We all know that wearing our babies helps to solidify our bond with them. They are as close as they can be, they can hear our heartbeat, feel our breathing and it helps them to regulate their own body temperature. My little one always loved being worn. During those first months when she had her dreaded witching hours wearing her was sometimes the only answer to calming her down.
I love that when I dance she is right there with me and enjoying herself just as much as I am!
2. The Fitness Aspect
"Losing the baby weight" is a goal for many new mothers. We know that during those first few weeks postpartum it is so important to give our body the time it needs to recover and heal from the birth experience, but after that we want to get moving again.
I did mom & baby yoga, but once my little one started getting more mobile it didn't work for us anymore.
Salsa Babies allowed me to get some exercise while holding my baby close and not being distracted by where she was or what she was getting into!
3. Connecting with other moms
What I quickly learned was that the Salsa Babies class was about more that just holding our babies close and dancing. It was about sharing our stories and experiences, bringing us together in the community, providing an outlet, having a group that understood one anothers struggles and lent a listening ear.
We were supporting one another through this journey we call motherhood.
4. Who doesn't love a sleeping baby?
This was a perk I was never expecting! You would think: salsa music + dancing = energy filled baby? Wrong! My little one would start kicking her feet as soon as that music started pumping, but as I started moving my hips and following the steps lo and behold her eyelids would start drooping. Through the Salsa Babies class I had stumbled upon a way to put her to sleep when she was fussy.
To this day, I can turn on the music and dance her to sleep when nothing else works!
5. Through teaching I could share my experience
