As moms, we know how isolating parenting a new baby can be, and as doulas we hear about it all the time from our clients - we get it! Sometimes you just need to get out and connect with others in your community, and we are so thrilled to be able to host a monthly social group "Coffee, Tea, Mom & Me".
There's a saying in life - timing is everything.
But how do you get time on your side? How do you plan things (like getting pregnant) that can't be planned? When my husband Mark and I decided to start our family we knew we had to try to structure it around my competition seasons. I run my own business where I train, coach and compete dressage horses and students on the international circuit. My daily life before baby was a 6 day work week where I would ride 6 horses and teach about 4 lessons per day.
For the first time since becoming a father I am not looking forward to Father's Day. All of the fun stuff that I would normally want to do with my kids is now overshadowed by the knowledge that I will never get to do them with my dad again.
My dad passed away recently from cancer and it has completely wrecked me. I suffer from depression and anxiety on a normal day and then dealing with grief has just pushed them into hyper-drive (who knew depression had a flux capacitor?).
I was at a sporting event with my kids recently when I noticed a mother struggling with her toddler. This poor woman and child were squared off in a battle of the wills. From what I could gather, this mother was trying to get her 2-year-old to sit still through the entire event which, let’s face it, is something most adults can't do! This mother’s face was dripping in sweat and frustration (and a touch of embracement) as she attempted to subdue her daughter to fulfil a greater expectation that she and society had placed on them:
“You should be able to manage it all!”
