Getting pregnant and having a newborn often brings along increase stressors and worries which are usually unspoken.  It is reported that 1 in 7 women experience Postpartum Mood Disorder (PMD) and/or Postpartum Anxiety.  Risk factors can include having a past history of anxiety and depression, past struggles with fertility, perinatal loss, significant hormonal changes during pregnancy and changes in sleep. Is “I just pee’d a little” the new badge of honour among women that certifies an honest hearty laughter? Most women think it’s just part of having a baby. Leaking a little after having a baby, while common, is NOT normal. In fact, Urinary Incontinence (leakage of urine) is no laughing matter, and having incontinence during or after pregnancy is a strong predictor that you will experience incontinence again in the next 10-15 years.

April has been a very special month for me and my husband, we finally got to meet our little princess Zoey!!  April is also special to me now because it is C-Section Awareness month.
If you had asked me what my birth plan was before Zoey I would have told you I took all the classes, I did all the prep work to have a natural labour and delivery. I practiced breathing, I took HypnoBirthing classes, I bought the birth ball.

I envisioned my labour and my little girls entry into the world.  I was ready.  I was excited!

Then at 41 weeks 1 day, it all went out the window.

Preparing for baby’s arrival is an exciting time. Expectant moms plan and prepare diligently in anticipation of baby’s needs. However, one of the areas frequently overlooked in preparation for postpartum is the challenge of meal preparation and proper nutrition for Mom once the baby arrives.
For even the most domestic of Goddesses, combining the needs of feeding your newborn baby with your lack of sleep, your own recovery, and your possible dietary or food sensitivity needs, makes the necessity of nourishing postpartum meals a real challenge.

The solution:  Batch cooking freezer meals!

You've recently given birth and are now in the mood to rekindle that spark that 9+ months ago resulted in your new baby (or babies).  You may be wondering what forms of contraception to use in this post-baby world of yours.  The latest recommendation is to wait 18 – 24 months before getting pregnant again to allow your body and hormones time to recover and balance out.  Did you know that waiting also reduces the risk of premature birth?

It's important to know your birth control options!

Mom's Best Kept Secret

As a mother of two boys under 3 years old I understand the desire of many moms to give their kids the healthiest childhood possible.  Of course that’s what every mom wants for their child! From the food we put into their mouths and the activities we register them for,  to the cleaning supplies we use in our home - we are always, at some level, wondering if the choices we make are the right ones for our children.

How is it even possible that 2017 has come to an end?

This month, Sarah and I will be celebrating our 2 year anniversary as work wives - and my, what a journey it has been!  Our honeymoon phase has long passed and we spent the early part of 2017 learning how to work smarter, got into a great groove and began functioning like a well-oiled doula machine!

Baby's Second Night - Mississauga Doula
Have you ever heard of "Baby's Second Night"?  It's a normal pattern of fussiness and cluster feeding that occurs around that 48 mark in a baby's life, and is an important topic we cover with clients in our prenatal appointments as their birth doulas or childbirth educators.  But, as we continue our support as Postpartum and Infant Care Doulas, I can tell you, that it's not unusual for us to get a phone call from our clients after baby's second night concerned about the fact that they just can't put their baby down.

A common barrier to babywearing for some parents may be the huge market of baby carriers. There are so many brands, types, price points etc., that some parents may feel overwhelmed and not know where to begin.
First and foremost it is important to know that the type of baby carrier, or the brand of baby carrier is not at all important.

My Postpartum Body... and Sex

It's no secret - for many women, the experience of having sex after having a baby can be quite different than it was before baby.  It is typically recommended that women wait 6 weeks postpartum before having sex in order to minimize the risk of infection, but many women aren't aware of some of the symptoms they may experience during  sex in the postpartum period even after those 6 weeks (especially from a physical standpoint - the emotional and hormonal side, well that's a whole other blog post).

Have you heard the whisper: “It’s time for change”?

I had a different understanding of myself before I became a mother. I thought I was mostly an imprint of my ancestors. Generational fears transferred to me, like the one that said I had to hang on to my long-time job. It was inspired work, but at the decade mark a voice pipped up: “Try something new!” only to be silenced by fear repeatedly.

If you are battling with low breast milk supply you may have heard about Lactation cookies. As a postpartum and infant care doula, I am often supporting breastfeeding mothers increase their milk supply but I rarely make lactation cookies because I've been so disappointed with recipes I have found online.

The Ultimate Struggle

6/9/2016

postpartum doula
I was at a sporting event with my kids recently when I noticed a mother struggling with her toddler. This poor woman and child were squared off in a battle of the wills. From what I could gather, this mother was trying to get her 2-year-old to sit still through the entire event which, let’s face it, is something most adults can't do!  This mother’s face was dripping in sweat and frustration (and a touch of embracement) as she attempted to subdue her daughter to fulfil a greater expectation that she and society had placed on them:

“You should be able to manage it all!”
